Heron Hospice Society - Support Services
Caregiver Support, End of Life Care / Palliative Care, Mental Health - Adult, and Mental Health - Child & Youth
Provided by Heron Hospice Society
Grief Circle: using a variety of techniques, grief is explored in a small group setting, with time for each participant to share their grief journey. Led by a professional counsellor, the group sessions may be offered online or in person.
Grief Companions: Participants are matched with a trained Grief Companion volunteer and have the opportunity to connect by phone, online, or in person at a time that works best for them. Volunteers, who receive training and supervision from a registered clinical counsellor, offer compassionate listening and support throughout the participant’s grief journey.
Counselling: Registered counsellors provide Delta and Tsawwassen First Nation community members and their families with practical and emotional support during their grief journey. They offer a safe place to express and process emotions, without judgement. Clients can access up to eight sessions at no cost.
Vigil Services: services allow for family members and caregivers to take some time to rest, reflect and tend to any aspects of daily life knowing a caring person is at their loved ones bedside. This involves a team of volunteers who make themselves available to sit at the loved ones bedside. Vigil services are provided to long-term care homes as requested.
Therapeutic Touch: qualified volunteers offer Therapeutic Touch in clients' homes or onsite.
Tea Service: This program, led by volunteers, creates a special moment of splendour for residents of the Irene Thomas Hospice and their families. The volunteers offer refreshments and treats on an antique tea cart, served on beautiful china and silver.
Hospice Visits: Volunteers visit the Irene Thomas Hospice seven days a week to offer connection, comfort, and companionship. They spend time with residents and their families, providing warm, compassionate support during a deeply meaningful time.
Remembrance Ceremonies: Remembrance ceremonies are unique opportunities to honour your loved ones in a meaningful way. These ceremonies are open to all residents of Delta, not only those served by the hospice residence. Our events are designed to welcome people of all ages and are non-denominational.
Bereavement Bag Program: Created to offer a sense of comfort & connection during the difficult time after a loved one dies. This basket was made possible by generous donations from Delta residents as a way to let people know that they are not alone. Each basket is lovingly prepared by Heron Hospice Society volunteers.
Community Education: provides workshops and webinars to help educate the community on end-of-life issues, including death, grief and loss, and related topics. Partnering with allied healthcare professionals, these education sessions are open to the public and will feature end-of-life supports, advance planning, understanding of hospice care, bereavement and more.
Group Programs: Offers a range of group programs designed to support individuals who are grieving, living with a life-limiting illness, or caring for someone who is. The programs are varied and updated regularly to reflect the needs and interests of our community. We invite you to explore what’s currently available. Click here to see current programs.
