Crabtree’s Cultural and Indigenous Programming

Provided by YWCA Metro Vancouver

Supports Indigenous culture by facilitating and creating safe spaces for the community to gather, learn from each other, share knowledge and build community.
The following programs are offered:
  • Indigenous Cultural Worker: The Elder in Residence provides one-to-one or group support for families. The Elder’s presence within the community enriches Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, approaches to community support, healing and wellness. The program also supports those disconnected from their families and those who have recently reunited, helping them culturally, spiritually, emotionally, or physically reconnect with their Indigeneity.
  • Her Place: A Traditional Knowledge Keepers Group: A program for Knowledge Keepers, Elders and Seniors to create connections with and learn from other moms and women from different generations. Together, everyone participates in fun, hands-on cultural activities and traditional arts and crafts. Participants learn about health and wellness, as well as traditional foods, herbs, and plants for healing. A cultural meal is enjoyed at each session.
  • AIDP Consultants: The Aboriginal Infant Development Program worker offers 1:1 home visits and/or office visits to provide family support. The consultant also administers ASQ (Ages and Stages Questionnaire) Developmental Survey and provides support with activity planning and goal setting. They will also provide parenting and infant development information, referrals to health, social and community services and how to access other YWCA programs and services.
  • Books, Bags and Babies: Books, Bags and Babies is an early literacy program that welcomes both parents and children. It incorporates Indigenous storytelling, crafts and cultural teachings to encourage early childhood literacy and strengthen family bonds.
