Withdrawal Management Services (Detox) provide medically supported care to people in withdraw from substances, including alcohol and opiates. These programs provide a safe place to stay or environment for the client to address individual needs. Each community offers different types of services, with varying eligibility criteria and referral processes with the following standard parameters to consider:
  • Anyone living in the Island Health Authority area who is experiencing substance use challenges may be referred to Withdrawal Management Services.
  • Services offered are dependent on the community in which the client lives: Bed-based care may be available through inpatient services and day programs in Nanaimo and Victoria, OR connection to community-based care in other regions.
  • ALL programs and services are completely voluntary: Clients must be looking for withdrawal management services for their substance use.
  • Clients must provide their consent in order to complete a referral to these services.
  • Programs generally consist of withdrawal management (social detoxification), screening and assessment, brief intervention, and addictions support
How to Access
  • Referral is required - Referring clinicians please refer to Physician Information below.
  • If the client does not have a primary care provider OR requires information & assistance with accessing withdrawal-related services, they can contact the Local Mental Health and Substance Use Team for next steps.

Details: Clients can self refer to a MHSU Team to access some services, BUT will require a referral for Withdrawal Management Services. Clients should call their local Mental Health & Substance Use team (link above) to start their self-referral process.
